Northwestern Swim Fitness

PROJECT

What is our Project?

The board of directors of Northwestern Swim & Fitness, a nonprofit corporation, is developing plans to build a year-round public community swimming pool facility within the Northwestern Lehigh School District in Lehigh County, PA. We request your financial support for this project.

What is our current Need?

Our next step is to raise funds to undertake a feasibility study, about $65,000, and then to purchase land (about $500,000). The study will give us a concept plan with essential components to discuss and get feedback from all people in the community. We want to ensure that we have a facility in a good location that is the right size and has the right features to meet the needs of novices and lap swimmers alike, and can also accommodate a swim team and those rehabilitating injuries. We want to ensure the sustainability of this facility with an endowment for well into the future.
The estimated cost of the project is $5-7M.

Where will the money come from?

Having IRS 501c(3) public charity status makes us eligible to apply for state and private grants. A big thank you to the Lions Follweiler Northwestern Community Foundation which has invested $2000 in our project!

We are raising funds for the feasibility study ($65K). Please consider yourself invited to give! As of September 2023, we have 56 different individual and business donors and have raised just over $13,000. Based on the results of the study, we will develop a budget for the project going forward.

This is a nonprofit organization, not affiliated with the schools or local govt. The project will solicit no tax money from townships. We ask businesses to help as they are able. It can't happen without you. Please help bring a swimming pool facility to our area!

History, Background, Population

In 2018 sixteen Northwestern teachers supported the idea of a pool to help residents learn to swim and be safe in the water. A resident survey was sent to 20,000 households and businesses to determine interest. In 2019 NWS&F incorporated and registered as a nonprofit for fundraising in the state. Township supervisors expressed verbal support for a feasibility study and sent us letters of support. Our board approached the Greater Valley YMCA to ascertain interest in partnering. The Y declined, as they had, and continue to have other plans for expansion. In 2020 we attained 501c(3) status and received our first grant. We registered with GuideStar-Candid Directory and achieved a bronze seal, working our way up to gold. In 2023 we celebrate new business supporters as we raise funds for the feasibility study. Jerdon Construction, Pencor (Blue Ridge Communications) and an employee who contributed throught the Air Products Foundation are some of our business supporters.

Northwestern Lehigh is a rural community with a population of 15,000. Many athletic fields and organized sports programs exist for school-age children, but our senior members and others express a need for local low-impact recreation and fitness options, including health coaching. A community aquatic recreation facility featuring both a cool and a warm water pool could be utilized by residents of all ages. Beyond our school district, people responded positively to our survey from other neighborhoods. A swim facility could potentially reach 50,000 additional residents in these communities.
